Garage Door Opener Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting A Garage Door Opener

Has it ever happened to you? You know, you press the button on your garage door opener and nothing happens? “Um… it’s gotta be the battery on the remote” you think. So you press the button again. Still nothing. Of course, you’re still not convinced, so you press it a third time (and maybe if you’re adamant about it, a fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh time)! Alas… still nothing. Your heart sinks and you let out a sigh of frustration (either that or mutter a few swear words under your breath). Of course, that doesn’t help the situation any, so now you have to do some good old garage door opener troubleshooting.

Back in the day, before the age of garage door openers, someone had to get out of the vehicle and manually open the garage door, drive the vehicle through, and then get out and close the garage door – regardless of the weather… and some garage doors were heavy, clunky, or just plain troublesome. In today’s age of technology, the development of garage door openers has given people the power of convenience and added a few problems when they don’t work properly. While most challenges are probably something small that you can find and fix yourself (the most common problems are with the safety features, adjustment controls, or power supply), some require more extensive work to get things moving again. Garage Door Panels

As we mentioned when talking about garage door replacement, raised panel garage doors are the most common type of garage door style. Sometimes a garage door panel can get damaged by a stray branch, an angry punch, a hard kick, or simple wear and tear. Instead of spending an arm and a leg with an entire garage door replacement, simply replace the damaged garage door panel. All you have to do is follow a few simple steps and voila, an almost new garage door!

The first step that you need to do in order to replace a garage door panel is to find a replacement panel. Your garage door should have a manufacturer’s sticker somewhere on the garage door with information about the garage and how to contact the manufacturer. There’s a good chance that when you contact the manufacturer that they will tell you to get an entirely new garage door because the panel may be different colors due to weatherization or there may be some other kind of damage that needs to be replace. While this may be true, a good can of paint is a lot cheaper than an entire garage door. Keep in mind that depending upon the damage and placement of the garage door panel, replacing the entire garage door may be easier and less time intensive than replacing a single panel. Only you can decide which is going to be easier and more cost effective for you. Continue reading “Garage Door Panels”

Garage Door Replacement

There’s a commercial on T.V. (or several) where a homeowner accidentally drives right through their garage door. In another one, a homeowner is sitting in their car in their garage and puts the car in reverse. You know what happens next… they step on the gas and back up right through the garage door! It seems that they forgot that they have to open it before exiting the garage and they actually drive through the garage door instead. If you’ve ever done one of these things, then you’ll probably need a garage door replacement. If you haven’t, then there are only a few other reasons why you might need a garage door replacement.

In fact, there are really only two major reasons for a garage door replacement. The first reason is purely cosmetic. Maybe you just moved into a new, used home and the garage doesn’t look the way you want it to. It’s possible that your garage door has scratches on it or it’s rusted in certain parts that make it look old and worn. It could even be that you want to have a different look using a different material like wood instead of steel. Whatever it is, a cosmetic change is probably the most popular reason for a garage door replacement. Continue reading “Garage Door Replacement”

How To Fix Garage Doors

Sometimes, even with the best garage door maintenance, your garage door will still need to be fixed. Mechanical items used multiple times a day that are under all forms of tension eventually break down, but don’t worry you need not be a mechanical genius to fix garage doors… usually.

The first step to any garage door repair is to first determine what’s wrong. Have you ever felt some pain shooting down your leg for some reason? Most people think that there’s something wrong with their leg. If you’ve ever had back challenges, you’ll know that it’s not your leg that’s the challenge, it’s a pinched nerve in your back or spinal cord. So massaging the pain out of your leg or working to “fix” the pain in your leg by working on your leg doesn’t do you any good. Sure, a leg massage may temporarily make your leg feel better and until you address the pinched nerve in your back, those leg pains will come back in full force. So to fix your leg, you have to fix your back. Just like your back, when it comes to garage door repairs, you must first troubleshoot the root cause of the challenge.
